Abstract

This paper examines the Neusoft Group born out of Northeastern University in Shenyang, Northeast China as a case study, investigating the background to its success in overcoming the typical issues affecting a university-affiliated venture enterprise. Specifically, we examine how this group is developing into a leading Chinese corporation in the field of software development and IT solutions and how it is contributing to the development of the IT industry in this area. Despite being a university-affiliated enterprise, the Neusoft Group has, in addition to its technical expertise, a management principle that emphasizes customer service and business/sales strategies, thus attracting considerable investment from its foreign-corporation clients. Furthermore, doing business in Northeast China, where employment opportunities are low, turned out to be a benefit due to the hiring of many university graduates and also was a factor in the development of the Neusoft Group despite its headquarters being located in a local city. Additionally, the Neusoft Group has been able to promote an extensive educational and training system for employees as an educational institution. In promoting this system, it has been successful in hiring new IT graduates from universities in Northeast China at relatively low wages. In short, we can state that taking advantage of its characteristics as an educational institution has been a major factor driving the development of the Neusoft Group in a local area. On the basis of this case study, we conclude that the development strategy for creating and growing a university-affiliated venture enterprise in a local city should aim not only to become a company specializing in technology development but also one that can leverage its strengths as an educational institution characteristic of a university-affiliated venture enterprise.
