Effect of hydrogel and phosphorus core on ectomycorrhizal colonization of oak seedlings in dry condition

In order to investigate the variation of colonization rate of ectomycorrhiza (CRE) and its impact on growth in oak seedlings, the pot experiments were conducted in the greenhouse. Each pot contained a core at the bottom which was filled either with saturated super absorbent polymer (Hydrogel Core) or phosphorus fertilizer (Phosphorus Core). Seedlings were exposed to three water levels for low, medium and high. The media in each water level contained three phosphorus level (0, 40, and 80 mg P/100g soil). The results indicate that the CRE decreased with increasing water level. In P core pots, treatments with ectomycorrhizal spore and control were different statistically in low water level while in middle and high water levels they were not different. Hydrogel core treatments had significantly higher CRE than P core treatments in low water level. Moreover, hydrogel core of low water level had the higher growth than phosphorus core of low water level in treatments receiving low phosphorus.
