Abstract

There are not only visible barriers to social participation of disabled people, but also invisible one. Stigma is made up of social responses towards disabled people, internalizing social norms and autonomous suppression of disabled people through social interactions. This paper aims to clarify the art of visualizing and sharing stigma of physical disability between disabled people and non-disabled people through the participant observation of a theater group mainly consisting of severely disabled people and non-disabled people. In process of playing rehearsal by the group, disabled and non-disabled members with various backgrounds reflected on equality and differences between members. And they deepened their understandings about experiences, events, emotion, and consciousness related to the disability of disabled members, through referring their own similar experiences and events for playing their roles. Those experiences and events have been understood that is not common for disabled people but particular for a disabled person. And those were shared by disabled and non-disabled members. These processes of understandings could be called “dialogue”. Their rehearsal was experimental and different from a daily social interaction. The dialogue was established in this rehearsal. The dialogue had possibilities to share stigmas of physical disability by disabled people and non-disabled people.
