<p>Glycerol, a high-boiling-point organic solvent is the main byproduct of the biodiesel and fatty acid industry. Since soaring petroleum prices and increasing demand for renewable energy have caused the biodiesel industry to flourish, It is necessary to explore novel economic applications of glycerol. In our study, recalcitrant construction waste wood was treated with aqueous glycerol in the presence of catalysts, and ethanol was produced by prehydrolysis and simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation in a bench-scale plant. We also applied glycerolysis to the production of antiviral agent from sugarcane bagasse and woody biomass, and found the microwave glycerolysis produces lignin and lignin-carbohydrate complexes suppressing replication of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV). Furthermore, we transformed Saccharomyces cerevisiae to utilize glycerol as carbon source for bioethanol production. The metabolic engineering is a breakthrough to utilize glycerol as pretreatment solvent for recalcitrant biomass and carbon source for production of biofuels, chemicals and bioactive compounds.</p>
