Abstract

Kurokawa-no, a folk performance art in Kurokawa, has changed its style with the changes in local society. This paper aims to show a future direction of Kurokawa-no as cultural capital by building Kurokawa-no conservation model by using hearing data from local residents. The model was built from 29 residents' hearing data about their relation to agriculture and Kurokawa-no by grounded theory approach. The model contains many concepts. The concept "custom focused thinking style", which contributes to "Kurokawa-no conservation effort", may decline with the changes in local society. Then Kurokawa-no in the future needs labor-saving, revenue improvement and economic valuation. It means "reinterpretation in Kurokawa-no" is necessary because Kurokawa-no is not an economic activity but a holy ritual. Reinterpreting Kurokawa-no as "tradition" might be accepted by both longtime residents and outsiders. Even an outsider who does not like Kurokawa-no mentioned that Kurokawa-no should be maintained because it is "tradition." However, interpreting Kurokawa-no as "holy ritual" may not be shared by longtime residents and outsiders as seen in a local resident's remark "Kurokawa-no is not a traditional arts but a festival." This "festival" means "Ougi-sai (Ougi-festival)", which is taken place every February and Kurokawa-no is originally performed in Ougi-sai for Ougi-sama (local spirits in Kurokawa). Thus, relation of the local residents to Kurokawa-no will vary according to residents' type in the future. For example, both longtime residents and outsiders can deal with Kurokawa-no performance for tourists cooperatively but performance in Ougi-sai might be borne mainly by longtime residents.
