Abstract

Transfer of Cs-137 from the A0 layer to mycelia of Lentinula edodes was evaluated using mycelial blocks as an alternative model of bed logs. Matured mycelial blocks were set on the ground surface of a Cryptomeria japonica forest in May 2015. Only the bottom side of the cultivation bag was opened during the experimental period, and the mycelial blocks were collected monthly from June to November 2015. One-half of the mycelial blocks were sterilized before using as negative controls to evaluate the contribution of living mycelia on Cs-137 transfer. The Cs-137 concentration of the lower half of the living mycelial blocks was two times greater than the same part of sterilized mycelial blocks one or two months after setting. Adhesion and decoloration of the litter was observed on the surface of the living mycelial blocks, whereas no such phenomena were observed in sterilized blocks. No significant difference in water content was observed between living and sterilized mycelial blocks throughout the experimental period. These results indicate that the activity of living mycelia of L. edodes participates in the transfer of Cs-137 from the A0 layer to mycelial blocks.
