• Evaluation of Sports Volunteering through Collaboration between a University and a J-League Club: Focusing on “Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons”

抄録

Due to various changes in society, developing young people currently require support to improve their ability to adjust to society. Thus, METI(2006)advocated the concept of “Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons(FCWP)” and implemented a successful model project for evaluating and improving these competencies at universities. Although it has been pointed out that the effects of volunteer work on these competencies should be investigated, there has been very little practical research on the effects of sports volunteering. This study had three purposes:(1)to develop and implement the “Tokushima Vortis(a J-League club)Game Volunteer Program” in cooperation with the University of Tokushima,(2)to clarify the changes in the students’ FCWP, and(3)to evaluate the program to determine the possibility of using sports volunteering to improve these competencies. Measurement items of the FCWP were determined by referring to previous studies, and a questionnaire was distributed to 38 university students(in their first or third year).

The following results were obtained. Firstly, by analyzing 11 competency factors, except the “ability to detect issues”, that are known to be reliable and valid, it was found that the students showed significant improvement in the following eight skills: “initiative,” “ability to influence,” “execution skill,” “planning skill,” “creativity,” “ability to deliver messages,” “ability to grasp situations,” and “ability to apply rules and regulations.” Furthermore, significant effect sizes were observed in three other competency factors. These findings suggest that sports volunteering has unique developmental effects on FCWP, whereas previously only internships have been thought to improve them. Secondly, an analysis of gender differences in improvements revealed that the “ability to listen closely and carefully” had a significant interaction, which means that sports volunteering opportunities should be utilized in consideration of gender. Thirdly, there were significant interactions for “planning skill,” “ability to deliver messages,” and “ability to listen closely and carefully” between students in each year of university. This suggests that the mentoring system within the sports volunteering system has favorable effects. In addition, some problems in the system were revealed.

From the above findings, the "three-step configuration" and "mentor system" could be evaluated from the point of view of improving students’ basic social skills. In particular, group activities in event planning from "step" to "jump" were effectively applied. In addition, the results indicated that the efficacy of the program for improving students’ basic social skills could be determined according to specific FCWP and by "sex" and "grade".
