Abstract

Ammonia is a representative active nitrogen species that is indispensable for living beings. Industrial ammonia synthesis from N2 and H2 under high pressure and a high temperature known as the Haber・Bosch Process was established in 1913. 170 million tons/year of ammonia is currently produced by this process. We are challenging the creation of new catalysts that enable the synthesis of ammonia under mild conditions (<2MPa, <400°C), leading toward on-site synthesis. This article describes the outline of our approach utilizing electrides in which electrons serve as anions in the compounds from the viewpoint of materials science.
