- Microstructure and joint strength of friction stir spot welded aluminum alloy sheet/plated steel sheet joints

<p>Solid-spot welding of A5052 aluminum alloy sheet and Al-coated steel sheet, and A5052 aluminum alloy sheet/Zn-coated steel sheet was performed using friction stir spot welding. The Microstructure and welding strength were evaluated by changing the plunge depth of the welding tool. The shape of the tool is shoulder diameter of 8 mm, probe diameter of 3 mm, and probe length of 1.7 mm, and the probe is M3 threaded. In case of the welding of A5052 and Al-coated steel, welding was achieved with a plunge depth of 1.9 mm to 1.6 mm. In case of the welding of A5052 and Zn-coated steel, welding was achieved with a plunge depth of 1.9 mm to 1.8 mm. Both the A5052/Al-coated steel joint and the A5052/Zn-coated steel joint showed the highest strength with the plunge depth of 1.9 mm. A5052/Al-coated steel joint was welded under the probe, whereas in A5052/Zn-coated steel joint was also achieved under the shoulder.</p>
