Magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is known as one of functional fluids, whose rheological properties can be controlled by the applied magnetic field strength. By using this property, brakes, clutches, dampers and various engineering applications have been studied. However, sedimentation of the magnetic particles of MRF will result in unsteady dynamic behaviors of the MR devices. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a new magnetoresponsive material named as the MR compound (MRC). The basic properties of MRC have not been elucidated, which is thought to intermediate between liquid and solid. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the magnetic field response of the MRC sample prepared in this research and to clarify the optimum material composition. In addition, we fabricated the vibration isolator incorporating the compound and evaluated the transmissibility characteristics. The effects of the magnetic field strength and the shear rate on the resultant viscosity change of the prepared MRC samples were investigated experimentally. Additionally, magnetic particle sedimentation behaviors in all of the MRC, MRF, and MR grease (MRG) were compared by the long-term observation. Furthermore, the vibration transmission characteristic of a variable viscous vibration isolator incorporating the MRC was evaluated. Experimental investigations showed that the proposed vibration isolator has excellent dynamic rigidity changing characteristics as compared to the conventional isolator.
