The Effectiveness of Groin System on the Control of Sediment Transport

Abstract

A groin system consisting of multiple groins is often employed as a countermeasure against beach erosion problems. This system aims to reduce the rate of the longshore sediment transport from upstream to downstream and aims to make a shoreline forward. Miyazaki Coast has been suffering from the beach erosion problem. A sand packed system, beach nourishment and the groin system have been applied as the countermeasure. Some groins are not extended to their designed length due to the difficulty of local consensus. In addition to the groin system, a jetty is planned to check the sedimentation of an artificial beach and a marina channel in Miyazaki Port. This study evaluates the performance of the groin system with a numerical model by setting some scenarios, including the scale of each groin and offshore wave direction. Also, the effect of the jetty on checking the sedimentation of the artificial beach was discussed in this study.
