Abstract

The sense-making process of organizational members is an important aspect of organizations, since it affects how the social reality of the organization is created and sustained through daily business operations. Several organizational researchers using interpretative approaches have tried to conceptualize these (inter-) subjective processes. The purpose of this study is to examine how ethnomethodology, which is traditionally considered to belong to a school of interpretative studies, contributes to this research field. We argue the followings: (1) ethnomethodology is not a kind of interpretative organization studies, and (2) ethnomethodology contributes to this research field by examining actual activities of organizational members. In other words, although ethnomethodologists do not have a primary interest in exploring the (inter-) subjective process of members’ cognition, it can contribute to this research field with detailed examination of actual data.
To demonstrate this point, we conducted an analysis of nurse-patient interaction in a dialysis treatment setting. In particular, we focused on how blood pressure was reported by nurses and recognized by patients. The results of the analysis show the following two elements: (1) patients systematically distinguished the deployment of understanding/interpretation of reported blood pressure values, and (2) through the strategic usage of recognition, organizational members created their social reality.
