Abstract

The present study investigated the relationship between the recognition of elder abuse and attitudes toward elderly people among young adults as potential caregivers. We developed the measurement of recognition of elder abuse including items of abuse action and its added preconception. We conducted a questionnaire including a measurement of explicit attitude and Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a measurement of implicit attitude for 49 students. The multiple regression analysis results showed that the implicit attitude toward the elderly related to recognition of physical and psychological abuse. Especially, the implicit attitude toward the elderly concerned with the psychological abuse items with the added preconception that had a higher score than the score of action items. The results of this study indicated that the recognition of elder abuse added to preconception was related not only to explicit but also to implicit attitudes among young adults.
