Abstract

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs), known as acoustic neuromas, arise from the myelin-producing Schwann cells of the vestibular nerves in the VIIIth cranial nerve. Bilateral VSs associated to neurofibromatosis type II are rare. On the other hand, recent studies revealed that sporadic VSs are more common than previously thought according with the development of clinical imaging and prolonged life span. However, the mechanisms of tumor growth and sensorineural hearing loss associated with VSs are poorly understood so far.

Pharmacotherapeutic options have been developing after discovering the efficacy of bevacizumab, an anti-VEGF antibody, for NF2-related bilateral VSs reported. Here we report an overview of the VS basic research and introduce our studies on VSs.
