Abstract

Deafness is one of the top-impact handicaps worldwide with a large number of people affected. The number of patients with moderate to severe hearing loss who need hearing aids for conversations is approximately 6 million in Japan and 30 to 40% of the people above 65 years old. In spite of the urgent needs and large market, there is no therapeutics for this deafness. One of the reasons why this issue remains unsolved is because we are not able to access or visualize cochlear cells due to its anatomical limitations. In this paper, first, comprehensive overview of current drug discovery for the deafness is documented from the viewpoint of biology and medicine. Next, two different modes of application are reported: iPSC-based drug discovery and regenerative therapy for the cochlear hearing impairments.
