Abstract

We examined the association between dietary lifestyle and social support in elderly adults. Of the 374 people who completed the questionnaire, the data obtained from 353 of the respondents aged 60 years and over (230 men and 123 women, mean age = 67.5 years, standard deviation = 4.5 years) were analyzed. We confirmed the demographic bias of age and social support group by a chi-square test. A confirmatory factor analysis showed the dietary lifestyle scale we employed had a similar structure to that used in a previous study. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the “dietary mood” factor of the scale was significantly related to both receiving and providing support. The results suggest that more positive dietary mood may contribute to improved social support.
