MORPHOLOGICAL VARIATIONS WITH SINUOSITY IN SINE-GENERATED MEANDERING CHANNELS WITH AND WITHOUT GROYNES

抄録

The present experimental study investigated the effect of channel sinuosity and curvature on the evolution of flow and morphology in sine-generated meandering channels. Experiments were conducted in meandering channels of two different sinuosities and curvature, composed of erodible bed and banks under the steady discharge, with and without groynes. Results showed that the channel with low sinuosity and a low ratio of the radius of curvature to the channel width (R/B) is more prone to erosion and morphological changes compared to the channel of higher sinuosity and R/B ratio. Channel sinuosity also influenced the overall morphological evolution with LS channel showing more distinct characteristics of a meander, forming point bar, pool and riffle sequences. Variation in the flow pattern with sinuosity was observed which ultimately determined the zones of maximum erosion-deposition in the channel. Although the groynes minimized the bank erosion, they also tend to shift the erosion from one point to another.
