Abstract

<p>In this study, we have developed walking assisting shoes by using elastomer-embedded flexible joint (EEFJ). The EEFJ is a kind of compliant joint, but has non-linear mechanical properties and adjustability for its mechanical properties. This non-linear mechanical characteristics is suitable for plantar and dorsiflexion of ankle motion in walking. In this report, we newly developed an EEFJ with a function for adjusting its initial angle. In addition, we experimentally investigated the effect of shoes on gait with the new EEFJ on healthy elderly subjects with and without the shoes.</p>
