- Operational Interface for Underwater Drone Considering Mother Ship Direction

<p>In recent years, zoologists have employed bio-logging method for biological research. Sperm whale is one of the targets of the bio-logging. Its purpose is to capture the predatory activity of the sperm whale. To achieve the purpose, we are developing an underwater drone to attach a camera logger to the mouth area of sperm whale swimming at the sea surface. It requires difficult operations. Therefore, we develop a simulator for the underwater drone utilizing “Unity” that is game engine to clarify necessary functions for the operations and an operational interface. It is difficult to understand self-location through images from a camera for the operator, because there is no clue in the sea. Furthermore, it is also hard to find a whale, because of narrow field of vision and transparency in water. In this paper to tackle the problems, a small graphical model that indicates posture of the underwater drone is introduced. In addition, we propose a system that displays the scale indicating the direction of the mother ship to make easy tracking of whale.</p>
