EFFECTS OF MANAGERIAL POLICY AND CONTEXT ON DESIGN-LED PROCESSES

DOI Open Access

Abstract

This study clarifies how a design-led process functions and how it affects design output under particular managerial policies and contexts. While past studies have shown that having the design function take the lead role in the product development process is an effective way to increase the quality of design output, they have not sufficiently discussed the managerial policy conditions and context in which the design-led process functions effectively. Through a survey and analysis of Japanese and Korean manufacturing companies, this study quantitatively verifies how a design-led process in product development defines the key characteristics of final design output. In addition, it shows how managerial policies and managerial context affect the functioning of a design-led process in product development.
