Abstract

This study reviewed important factors associated with joint activities and found that the only previous study that analyzed the characteristics of joint activities was based on the American Time Use Survey. Consequently, this study analyzed the characteristics of joint activities using disaggregate anonymized data from the 2001 and 2006 Surveys on Time Use and Leisure Activities in Japan. Findings reveal that (1) the total amount of out-of-home joint activities in Japan is smaller than in the United States, and accounts for 40% and 60% of all out-of-home activities on weekday and weekends, respectively, (2) the duration of joint activities is longer than solo activities and concentrate on weekdays around noon and evening, (3) for leisure activities, the share of joint activities with non-family companions is the highest, but there is a tendency to engage in joint activities with the family on weekends, and (4) with regard to changes between the two time periods observed, joint activities were observed to decrease, with significant reductions in joint activities with non-family companions.
