Abstract

To verify city center excursions of older citizens and step counts in detail, we asked older citizens to carry GPS devices for a period of one month to obtain GPS and step count data. Pass holders who can use public transportation at reduced fares, visited the city center more than non-pass holders, and stayed in the city center longer during the hours of 9am to 5pm. In addition, we compared the step counts of older citizens on days they visited and did not visit the city center. The data reveals that older citizens walked more on days they visited the city center. The vast majority of places visited and walking routes observed were between the main station and central business district. Moreover, the data shows that older citizens who visited the city center by public transportation, visited from further away and walked more than those who visited by car. Finally, we observed that when older citizens visited the city center by public transportation, the further they travelled resulted in more step counts in the day.
