Abstract

The purposes of this study are to explore learning strategies used by students of a college of National Institute of Technology(Kosen)and to determine how language proficiency affects the use of language-learning strategy. Oxford's(1990)Strategies Inventory of Language Learning(SILL) translated into Japanese was administered to 155 first-year Kosen students. The Global Test of English Communication for Students(GTEC for STUDENTS)was used to measure students' English proficiency. Three factors were extracted from this study: Out-of-class communication, English study skills and self-regulation. Only a few weak correlations were found among English study skills and English proficiency. Based upon these findings, it is suggested that more attention be paid to sociocultural contexts and identities and more training be given using allover self-regulation strategies by embedding them into regular classroom activities.
