Abstract

Introduction and environment of oceanographic radars which are used for coastal ocean research are summarized. Now there are approximately 400 radars in operation worldwide, and networked operations are available in the U. S. and other countries. The 2012 World Radiocommunication Conference(WRC-12)of the International Telecommunication Union(ITU)allocated a number of frequency bands to be used for oceanographic radar applications by the proposal of Japan and the U. S. Domestic technical standards and rules have been established due to the resolution of WRC-12. This facilitates the development of an environment in which oceanographic radars are licensed as operational radio stations. The present paper discusses the requirements newly established in response to the licensing and methods to fulfill them. The cooperation of the oceanographic radar community is need for negotiation with the authorities on increasing useable frequency bands and mitigation of license conditions, and also for discussion with users about the coordination of operations.
