<p>The butt dissimilar joints of Al-Mg Alloy A5052 and Al-Mg-Si Alloy A6063 by means of friction stir welding (FSW) were prepared for investigating the strength properties of the joints. The FSW tool used in this study has cemented carbide 5mm diameter probe and a shoulder made of alloy tool steel with a diameter of 20 mm. With using this FSW tool, defect-free joints were obtained by shifting the center of the tool to the A6063 side. There was a lower hardness region around ex-butt surface in A5052 and A6063, but hardness in FSW region on A6063 was recovered by heat treatment. The average tensile strength of non-heat treated joint was approximately 150 MPa, and that of heat treated joint was about 175 MPa. For all specimen, fracture occurred at a boundary between the lower hardness region and base metal in A6063.</p>
