Abstract

An eye-tracking experiment in a public library was performed to reveal the effect of location of books on the number of times the books are looked at by patrons in public libraries. The experiment was conducted at Toyohashi City Central Library in Aichi Prefecture from October to November 2017. Eleven subjects participated in the experiment. The participants wore an eye-tracker and were required to choose more than one book they were interested in in the library. The moving image frames bookshelves were looked at were extracted from the experiment data and the gaze time for each height of bookshelves, for each vertical location (rows) and for each horizontal location (left, center and right) were calculated. The results showed that: (1) Vertical location had a significant impact on the times the books were looked at. Books on the upper rows were looked at longer than those on the lower rows. In addition, there was a difference in this effect depending on the height of bookshelves. (2) Horizontal location of books did not have an impact on the times the books were looked at. (3) No interaction was found between vertical and horizontal location of books on the times the books were looked at.
