Abstract

This study examines the lexical categorization of “na”-appended katakana words borrowed from English in comparison with Japanese adjectives and adjectival verbs. In order to consider the lexical categorization of “na”-appended katakana words, the number of words and derivatives in adjectives, adjectival verbs and “na”-appended katakana words in the Sūpā Daijirin (Sanseido, 2004) were compared. The results confirm the hypothesis that the differences in linguistic behaviors of each lexical category are influenced by the lexical features, semantic features of words and the degree of Japanized process in “na”-appended katakana words.
