Does the implementation of ad-libitum drinking during outdoor practice in summer and autumn repress dehydration in university athletes?

Abstract
<p>The purposes of this study were 1) To clarify whether the average dehydration rate of lower than 2% can be achieved in extremely hot environments if 124 inter-college level athletes (109 males and 15 females) belonging to the four outdoor sports clubs (long-distance athletics, handball, tennis, and rugby) drink ad-libitum during their practice. 2) To compare their sweat rate and dehydration rate in summer with those in autumn in each club. The results showed that the average dehydration rate was lower than 2% in all the clubs, and thus it became clear that proper hydration can be achieved by ad-libitum drinking under the supervision of coaches with qualified license and/or long experience. However, 6 long-distance runners out of 17 showed dehydration higher than 2% in summer although the average rate remained lower than 2%. They keep running without a break for a long period of time and are running when they drink, which we assume is the reason their fluid intake turned out insufficient against sweat rate. In addition, it is suggested that environmental factors have a great impact on outdoor sports athletes because their fluid intake was significantly less and sweat rate significantly lower in autumn than those in summer respectively in the three clubs except for rugby.</p>
