Abstract

The use of local produce in school lunches is encouraged despite supply limitations especially in urban and suburban areas. We conducted a questionnaire-based survey of farms in Hamura City, Mizuho Town and Nerima Ward, Tokyo, where support systems for the use of local produce in school lunches are limited. Our result shows that delivery labor is correlated with sales, while coordination labor arises independently with sales to school lunch. Most farmers recognize that the distribution efforts are relatively small despite non-negligible working time compared to the sales volume. In the suburban areas, farmers are positive toward increasing their sales quantity to schools, despite the lower price level. On the other hand, farmers closer to the city center are not likely to increase this sales channel even though the price is high. Supporting farm household income, hence, will be important in the suburbs, while increasing local supply will be still difficult in the urban areas.
