Abstract

Drift objects such as vessels and vehicles generated by a tsunami are strongly affected by local velocity fields and topography and show complicated behavior. However it is difficult to observe the behavior of drifting objects during an actual tsunami attack and most of previous experiments used simple topography. Therefore, we carried out several experiments using two types of large and small drift models and a coastal city model, and analyzed the characteristics of drift motion in complicated velocity field. As a result, the behavior and landing area of drifting objects can be classified into several patterns in the case of large objects experiments, and the speed of drift objects becomes small in the area where the building density is high in the small objects experiments. Furthermore, it was clarified from the virtual particle experiment using spatiotemporal data of the velocity field that accurate evaluation of the collide with the sea floor and the rotational motion of drift objects is important for the reproduction by numerical models.
