Abstract

This study conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of bore waves, flowing over the mound, and the stability of covering blocks on the mound against the bore waves. The results indicated that the relative magnitude of lift forces acting on the blocks was considerably large compared to the other forces such as a drag force. Another important finding was that the initial water level around the mound before the attack of bore wave has significant influence on the stability of the blocks. Especially when the initial water level was slightly lower than the crest of the mound, covering blocks were flown even with relatively lower bore waves. This result, therefore, indicated that the required mass of covering blocks may be determined not only by the first tsunami wave but also by the following waves especially when the water level is lowered by the preceding waves.
