Abstract

A method to detect inundation by using surface water index (Normalizd Differential Frequency Index = NDFI) for footprint of microwave radiometer is developed. As NDFI involves not only inundation but surface water in river or paddy area, land use map is used for flood detection. This method is successfully applied to detect inundation in Oda river basin and some regions where suffered from H30 July heavy rainfall disaster. But, the method neees further improvement to be applied for urban area and near coastline. Temporal surface water storage after rainfall should be considered. Fraction of surface water at footprint is downscaled to probability of surface water at about 50-m pixel using flood hazard map. This demonstrates the possibility to produce high-spatial-resoultion surface water map.
