Abstract

Kotaro Takamura's first edition of Chieko–sho is highly evaluated as the love poem collection that, historically speaking, sold the most copies in Japan as a poem collection. This paper, however, regards Chieko–sho as a fictional work, not a poem collection, because it includes not only poems, but also six pieces of tanka and some memoirs. Stressing on the inclusion of essays on the memoirs, Chieko–sho should be regarded as a creative work on the life of love of fictional characters as ″Kotaro ″ and ″Chieko. ″ On top of that, almost all of the poems recorded there are a kind of compressed diaries, humorous idiotic expressions, emissions of mental impulses, and the instantaneous release of energy. Only ″Lemon elegy, ″ based on the simultaneous usage of the first person and the third person, shows the love in fiction by setting the past on the present in the work; it can be called fictional in terms of the composition and the time structure, and in this respect, it is worthy of high evaluation.
