Abstract

We investigated the refractive index of shock-compressed magnesium oxide in the 100‒400 GPa pressure range. Shock Hugoniot and a refractive index were measured using a laser-shock compression technique. The refractive index of MgO decreases monotonically with pressure to ~220 GPa along the Hugoniot and increases above the pressure. This result indicates that magnesium oxide is optically transparent enough to be used as a shock window at such dynamic high pressures.
