Abstract

To decrease fuel consumption required for heating in greenhouse vegetable production, an energy saving system combined with multi-layered thermal screens and water heat storage was tested. Furthermore, a simulation model of fuel consumption was developed based on measured data obtained during the experiment. Energy saving treatment with multi-layered thermal screens and water heat storage (ES) decreased fuel consumption by 60 % when compared with that of the control. In addition, this system exhibited high performance for reducing of fuel consumption. Conversely, tomato fruit production was lower than that of the control because of low solar radiation due to the shade of the screens. This indicates that the open-close system of the thermal screens should be further improved. By considering the individual performance of the energy saving technique, the multi-layered thermal screens decreased the heat transmission coefficient by approximately 30 % and the amount of heat supplied from the water heat storage was equivalent to 116 L of fuel. The fuel consumption estimated by the simulation model was in good agreement with the measured value, except in spring. The simulation model showed that the water heat storage reduced 31 L of fuel consumption, i. e., approximately 30 % of the value calculated via heat radiation. Furthermore, approximately 80 % of the total reduction in fuel consumption in ES was derived from the multi-layered thermal screens, and the remaining 20 % was derived from the water heat storage. The developed simulation model can predict fuel consumption irrespective of the area and set point of heating.
