<p>Before embarking on accurate design and drafting of products with various mechanical elements, it is necessary to realize an ideal concept based on theoretical grounds. The designer as an individual considers it enough on the desk. The necessity of the examination work has not changed from the era called Industry 1.0 to the present. However, the capabilities and characteristics of such tools have evolved significantly with time, both for individual designers and for companies and organizations. In this report, we will refer to these tasks as “desk studies” and the equipment used as “desk study tools”. For example, in the era of Industry 1.0, the mainstream design tool was the slide rule, which allowed calculations to be performed to three significant figures. However, presently, not only double-precision floating-point numbers, but also integers, can be calculated indefinitely using Python on a laptop PC. In the present paper, we summarize the elements and features of design tools, and how they have changed with the progress of technology. We plan to use these tools in the education of students who aspire to be future designers.</p>
