Abstract

We conducted surveys of explosive children attending elementary and junior high schools in Fukui prefecture. Results show that students suspected of intermittent explosive disorder (IED) attended 48.3 % and 28.6 % of elementary and junior high schools, respectively. In those schools, their relative frequencies were 0.84 % and 0.28 %. Many more boys were suspected of having IED than girls in elementary and junior high schools. They were most common among elementary school third and fourth graders. The most frequent cause of their emotional explosion was exacerbation of a neurodevelopmental disorder. Effective methods to address them were reported as understanding their development characteristics, building mutual trust relationships, and improving their self-esteem. When they exploded emotionally at school, effective countermeasures included gathering competent human resources and providing places where they can cool downed separately. Additionally, it is important for all school staff to respond to difficulties as one team and to build good partnerships with parents and related organizations. Ignoring their feelings and treating them intimidatingly are inappropriate. Medical intervention is anticipated as a solution to these difficulties. Future multi-disciplinary cooperation and support systems are sought based on medical evaluation of “pediatric IED.”
