Abstract

We analyzed the relationships among the colors of text on tablet screens and their backgrounds, legibility, and reading efficiency, involving 17 male and female university students. For each color scheme, 35 text display patterns were created using 18 background colors with different hues and brightness levels. As a character search task, the participants counted the number of hiragana characters contained in the text displayed on a tablet screen, and entered it by tapping the screen. When the background hue was green, the time needed to answer was significantly shorter at lower than higher levels of brightness. When the difference in the level of brightness between the text and background colors was the same, reading efficiency did not markedly vary among different hues. Color schemes using white characters and black or other background colors with low levels of brightness were suggested to increase the legibility of text on tablet screens and the efficiency of reading them.
