Abstract

<p>Background: There are many reports regarding the stigma and discrimination experienced by patients infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), but no reports have focused on the involvement of healthcare professionals in these practices. Research aim: To clarify hepatitis B virus carriers' experience with treatment, and to discuss ethical behavior of healthcare professionals. Method: We interviewed 10 patients diagnosed as HBV carriers. Interviews included questions on experiences after their infection was found. Data were analyzed inductively, and association diagrams were created among categories. Ethical considerations: The Aomori University of Health and Welfare Research Ethics Committee approved this study (approval number 1618, July 29, 2016), and all participants provided written informed consent. Results: Four core categories were identified: 1) Negative experience with healthcare professional involvement; 2)Positive experience with healthcare professional involvement; 3) Surrounding situation; and 4) Impact of HBV infection. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals need to understand and respond to what HBV carriers tend to have, not only what infectious diseases, and how to prevent infection. In addition, nurses need to be aware of their role as advocates and providers of emotional support and guidance for daily life.</p>
