Abstract

It is important to encourage residents to actively participate in civic activities, in promoting maintenance and improvement of the historic district. However, by placing importance on the ideas and ingenuity of the residents, sometimes stereotypical ideas that do not fit the historical fact of the region are proposed, and the proposal would not be acceptable by other residents. In this study, the following hypotheses were formulated and verified: first, that place attachment and subjective knowledge of the local history affect the civic awareness around maintenance and improvement of the historic district, and second, that place attachment and subjective knowledge of the local history have an effect on stereotypical ideas about maintenance and improvement of the historic district, and the influence of objective knowledge of the local history reducing the ideas. The results support the hypothesis.
