Abstract

Deep neck infections (DNIs) are declining in prevalence with the widespread use of antibacterial drugs, but the disease can become fatal if not properly or promptly treated. In this study, we studied the factors that were associated with prolongation of the hospital stay, assessed as a measure of the disease severity, in 60 patients with DNIs who were treated by cervical incision and drainage or puncture drainage at the Kansai Medical University Hospital. Univariate logistic regression analysis identified tracheostomy, elevated serum CRP value at the time of drainage, subhyoid extension of the abscess, and detection of anaerobic bacteria as significant factors associated with prolongation of the hospital stay. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified only the serum CRP value at the time of drainage as an independent factor that influenced the length of hospital stay. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the aforementioned factors, including the serum CRP, from an early stage of the clinical course, and to take measures to prevent aggravation of the disease.
