Abstract

Early childhood is considered to be an ideal start of education for sustainable development/education for sustainability as it is the time when children begin to form their identities and worldviews. This research focuses on an ecological democracy model of Skogsmulleskolan, which is an environmental educational method developed for young children in Sweden in the 1950’s. It reviewed three textbooks for the Skogsmulleskolan’s training course and workshops to identify different purposes to learn ecological concepts and how it is related to children’s participation and social transformation. As a result, it identified five purposes to learn ecology: (1)ecology as a scientific knowledge, (2)ecology as philosophy, (3)ecology as personal commitment, (4)ecology as shared values in a community and (5)ecology as a platform for structural social change. From the perspective of participation, ecology as a scientific knowledge and as philosophy are intertwined to deepen the sense of participation in the ecosystems on the Earth while the latter three are concerned with participation for social transformation. Skogsmulleskolan’s ecological democracy model implies that ecological thinking and worldviews, serving as a ecological compass, are the prerequisite for children to bring about structural transformation to construct a sustainable society now and in their future.
