メール受信時にゆっくり応答をするthrottling機能はspam対策として有効である。しかしながら、throttling機能を使用すると、メールの受信が完了するまで、あるいはspam送信者があきらめるまでSMTPコネクションを維持する必要があるため、メールゲートウェイが過負荷になりやすい。メールゲートウェイに大量のspamメールが送りつけられた場合、それらを処理する間、正常なメールの受信ができないことがある。このような過負荷状態を防ぐにはメールゲートウェイの多重化により負荷を分散するといった方法が考えら
