野外調査が重要な研究活動となる研究分野は人文社会科学に少なくない。野外調査の実施や記録に地図は必須のものと理解するが、日本のように地形図を簡単に入手できる環境が整っていないこともあって、タイ国の人文社会科学分野での地形図の活用は不十分でありかつ不慣れである。また、タイ国では、経済発展に伴って考古学上の重要な痕跡を現地で識別することが困難になってきている。このような現状から、野外調査での地形図の活用を促進するための道具としてナビゲーションツールの開発を進めている。本稿では、開発の目的と意義、さらに現在進めている現地での試用状況について報告する。

Field surveys are important research activities in various branches of the humanities. Topographic maps and aerial photographs are essential basic materials for sociological field surveys, but they have not been efficiently used in Thailand due to difficulty of access. On the other hand, many important archaeological remains in rural areas have become increasingly difficult to identify due to rapid environmental changes. To provide a practical tool to support a scientific approach to field surveys, I have been developing a navigation tool. In trials, it has proven sufficiently effective to navigate users to sites, and it can also provide easier understanding about the geographic surroundings of a location.
