2000年4月から3年計画で開始した時空間情報システムEcoNETVIS (Northeast Thailand Village Information System: Ecohistory)の開発は、空間情報システム、考古学、農業生態、地域研究の研究者らが参加する共同研究である。現代の農村社会に関する情報は政府が行う社会経済調査の結果であるデータベースから得るとともに、過去の情報は考古学者らのこれまでの研究活動の成果を空間情報データとして整備統合を図っている。現代の農村社会の多様性を議論するためには、現在の農村の姿だけでなく、現在につながる過去の村落の発展史、居住史などの歴史的な情報が不可欠であるからである。

A three-year collaborative project was begun in April 2000 among researchers in archaeology, geo-informatics, agricultural ecology, and area study to develop a time-series spatial information system, the Northeast Thailand Village Information System: Ecohistory (EcoNETVIS). In recent decades, nationwide social questionnaires have been widely conducted in many countries, and most of the results have been input into databases. In some cases, the authorities allow us to access these data for academic purposes. Thus the base geo-informatics system of this project, the Northeast Thailand Village Information System, NETVIS, was developed based mainly on the available socio-economic information on rural areas. In order to describe the current diversity of a rural community in detail, we need not only present-day but also historical information, such as continuity and discontinuity of settlement. Integration of this historical information with its geo-reference into the NETVIS is the central feature in the development of the EcoNETVIS.
