Abstract

地名は所在地の情報を他者と共有し、記録するための重要な情報であるが、さまざまな理由による変遷を経て現在の地名にいたっており、過去の地名と異なることは珍しくない。従って過去の資史料にみえる地名の空間上の考察や分析には、当時の地名と現在の地名の対応を確認することが不可欠である。また、地名はその名付けの背景を知る情報すなわち当地の自然環境や社会環境を示すものが数多い。過去の地名を現在の地名と対応させた地名履歴データベースは、単に過去の資史料記録を空間上に配置することに寄与するだけでなく、地域の生活誌あるいは小地域の歴史に関する客観的な情報を提供する基盤となる。筆者は、タイ東北部を中心とし、概ね20世紀初頭以降の村落単位の地名の収集と地名履歴データベースの構築を進めている。本稿では現状と取り組みおよび課題について報告する。

Place names are important information to share and to record the location of the event. But place names are not always same for long by various reasons of changes. For enabling spatial analysis of an area with historical information, it is indispensable to organize the relationship between such old place names and their corresponding current names. Since place names sometimes suggest their natural or social environment of locations, a historical database of place names may contribute not only to allocate old records on maps but also to offer richer information on livelihood and history of a community. The author has been collecting place names of village level in the northeast of Thailand over the past one century, and organizing a historical database of them. Current activities and tasks will be presented.
