Preparation and catalytic behavior of CeO<sub>2</sub> nanoparticles on Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> crystal

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>In this work, we examined the preparation, morphology, and catalytic behavior of CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> nanoparticles (NPs) on Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>(0001) crystal substrates. A CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> NP layer was prepared by the dipping method using a CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> nanocrystal colloid solution. Even after heat treatment at 1000 °C, the CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> NP layer maintained the granular morphology of CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> with a grain diameter of less than 40 nm. CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> NPs on an Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> crystal showed higher oxidation activity for gaseous hydrogen at moderate temperatures and enhanced oxygen release properties of CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>, compared with CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> powder. This was due to the highly dispersed CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> NPs and the interaction between CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> NPs and Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>; this clarified the importance of the Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> support for the CeO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> catalyst.</jats:p>
