Growth and characterization of potassium niobate fiber crystal from liquid with stoichiometric composition by μ‐PD method

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Potassium niobate (KNbO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>: KN) is a well‐known ferroelectric material with perovskite structure. Recently, this crystal has been given much attention as an environmentally friendly material as well as a material for surface acoustic waves (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) devices. It is, however, very difficult to grow KN crystals because KN melts incongruently. This paper reports that KN crystal fibers have been successfully grown from stoichiometric melt by the micro pulling down (μ‐PD) method, and the parameters necessary for the reproducible growth of KN fiber have been determined. The dielectric properties of grown fiber crystal were also measured. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
