Semiconductor Carbon Nanotubes as Ultrafast Switching Materials for Optical Telecommunications

<jats:p><jats:bold>The third‐order nonlinear optical property χ<jats:sup>(3)</jats:sup><jats:sub>I</jats:sub> of a film of single‐walled carbon nanotubes </jats:bold>was studied in the infrared region. The film combines a high χ<jats:sup>(3)</jats:sup><jats:sub>I</jats:sub> (–0.85 × 10<jats:sup>–7</jats:sup> esu at resonant wavelength) with a rapid transmittance recovery (from differential transmission spectra, see Figure), making it suitable for highly efficient and ultrafast devices for optical telecommunications.</jats:p>
