<i>In vitro</i> activity of tetracyclines, macrolides, quinolones, clindamycin and metronidazole against periodontopathic bacteria

<jats:p>We re‐evaluated several antibiotics including newer ones, for their <jats:italic>in vitro</jats:italic> killing activity, as well as their inhibitory activity, against clinical isolates of periodontopathic bacteria. Tetracyclines were active against <jats:italic>Porphyromonas gingivalis</jats:italic>, and were highly active against <jats:italic>Prevotella intermedia</jats:italic>, but demonstrated only a low killing activity against <jats:italic>Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans</jats:italic>. Rokitamycin. a new macrolide, and clindamycin were highly active against <jats:italic>P. gingivalis</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. intermedia</jats:italic>, but showed very weak killing activity against <jats:italic>A. actinomycetemcomitans</jats:italic>. Quinolones demonstrated excellent bactericidal activity against <jats:italic>A. actinomycetemcomitans</jats:italic>, and good inhibitory and bactericidal activity against <jats:italic>P. gingivalis</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. intermedia</jats:italic>. Metronidazole had an activity almost equivalent to quinolones against <jats:italic>P. gingivalis</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. intermedia</jats:italic>; but it was the least active against <jats:italic>A. actinomycetemcomitans</jats:italic>.</jats:p>
